Humbert of Neuchâtel
Humbert von Neuenburg († June 22, 1417 Delémont ) was Bishop of Basel from 1395 to 1417 .
Life
Humbert came from the Burgundian nobility. His parents were Diebold VI., Seigneur of Neufchâtel and Blamont , Vicomte de Baume and Marguerite of Burgundy. Diebold acquired pledges on the property of the Basel bishopric and in 1395 signed a contract with the Basel cathedral chapter , in which Diebold's son Humbert was promised the bishopric of Basel, subject to papal approval. In return, Diebold undertook to maintain the cathedral chapter for four years. Humbert, since 1394 canon in Metz , was elected under the current mandate in 1395 as bishop and in 1399 by Pope Boniface IX. confirmed, with the condition to compensate Wilhelm von Coudenberghe , who renounced his claims on Basel. Humbert, who led a chivalrous lifestyle, mainly resided in Delémont and rarely stayed in Basel. In 1400 he sold the Lords of Sisgau , Liestal , Waldenburg and Homberg to the city of Basel in order to pay off the bishopric's debts. Humbert renewed the synodal statutes issued by Peter von Aspelt and took part in the Council of Constance . In the years 1405 to 1410 he expropriated and expelled the Beguines from the bishopric. After his death in 1417, Humbert was buried in Basel Minster .
