Wilhelm Widemann , from 1836 by Widenmann , (born October 18, 1798 in Calw ; † July 14, 1844 in Bebenhausen ) was a German forest scientist at the University of Tübingen and forester in Bebenhausen.

life and work

After graduating from high school in Stuttgart in 1813 , he trained in accounting. In 1818 he entered the forestry training institute for forestry and hunting and its auxiliary sciences founded by the Württemberg royal family. In 1822 he completed his training with additional studies at the University of Tübingen with the state examination.

After study trips through important forest areas in Germany, he was appointed private lecturer for forest science at the University of Tübingen in 1822. Widenmann campaigned for the development of the forest sciences system and helped establish it at the university. At the same time, as a forester, he took over the Bebenhausen district with its important Schönbuch areas. In 1829 he was appointed full professor at the University of Tübingen. He was also assigned the subject of agriculture. In particular, he campaigned for the reforestation of the completely overused Schönbuch forests. Wilhelm von Widenmann is therefore considered a forest pioneer from the very beginning.

Widenmann was the editor of the Forstlichen Blätter for Württemberg.

The Widenmann monument, which was erected in Schönbuch on November 7th, 1847 by his friends and admirers, as well as many of the forests he reforested remind us of this great forester even today. In 1836 he was honored with the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , with which the personal Württemberg nobility ( ennobling ) was connected.

politics

Widenmann was in 1833 for the constituency of Oberndorf and from 1833 to 1838 for the constituency of Tübingen Amt a member of the Württemberg Landtag .
