Wilhelm zur Nieden

Wilhelm zur Nieden (born August 29, 1878 in Fröndenberg ; † April 23, 1945 in Berlin ) was a German engineer and a resistance fighter against the Nazi regime.

Life

Wilhelm zur Nieden was the son of the Protestant pastor of Fröndenberg, Adolf Theodor Karl zur Nieden. After graduating from high school, he studied at the Technical University of Hanover . The first job followed in 1904 at August-Thyssen-Hütte in Hamborn , and in 1910 he became technical director of the municipal works in Barmen .

From 1927 to 1933 he held the position of general director of the Leipziger Stadtwerke . After the National Socialists came to power , he had to give up his post in autumn 1933. In the following years he was a member of an expert committee of the Berlin Court of Auditors and worked as an expert. City Planning Officer i. In 1937, R. zur Nieden worked in the presidential department of the German Reich's Audit Office, a successor institution to Reich Savings Commissioner Saemisch, where he was responsible for reports on utilities. He was involved in the report on the city of Gelsenkirchen.

Zur Nieden was in close contact with the resistance group around the former Mayor of Leipzig, Carl Friedrich Goerdeler . He made himself available for a leading position in the Reich Ministry of Economics.

After the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 , he was arrested in August and sentenced to death on January 19, 1945 by the People's Court under the chairmanship of Roland Freisler . Wilhelm zur Nieden was shot together with Klaus Bonhoeffer and Rüdiger Schleicher as well as other prisoners on the night of April 22nd to 23rd 1945 by a special detachment from the Reich Main Security Office .

Wilhelm zur Nieden has an honorary grave in the Evangelical Cemetery of the Dorotheenstädtische and Friedrich-Werderscher parishes in Berlin.

Memorial plaques

There is a memorial plaque in Berlin-Mitte at Chausseestrasse 126. Another plaque hangs in the collegiate church in Fröndenberg.

Other awards

In Wuppertal a street (Zur-Nieden-Weg) at the Toelleturm / Lichtscheid in Barmen is named after him.
