Willem Nolen

Willem Nolen (born July 31, 1854 in Rotterdam , † March 24, 1939 in The Hague ) was a Dutch medic.

Life

Willem was the son of the doctor of the same name Willem Nolen (born July 19, 1820 in West-Bardenrecht; † January 3, 1864 in Rotterdam) and his wife Jenneke Braacx, who was married on May 3, 1843 in Rotterdam (born May 14, 1814 in Rotterdam; † April 30, 1857 ibid.). After attending the Erasmusgymnasium in Rotterdam, he enrolled at the University of Leiden on October 5, 1872 to study medicine. After working as an assistant to Samuel Sigmund Rosenstein for a year, he received his doctorate in medicine on October 27, 1880 with the thesis Rheumatismus gonorrhoricus . He then worked as a doctor in Rotterdam for eleven years and was appointed professor of internal medicine and pharmacology in Leiden on December 13, 1890, which task he took on on February 4, 1891 with Rede Bactreiologie en geneeskunde . On June 15, 1904, he was released from his professorship in pharmacy and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1906/07 . Nolen devoted himself above all to the fight against tuberculosis, had founded the Leidsche Association for the fight against tuberculosis and was its chairman.

He was also an employee of the Dutch Central Association for Combating Tuberculosis and was chairman of the association's tuberculosis study commission. He had contributed to the German handbook of tuberculosis and was chairman of the eighth congress of the international union against tuberculosis in 1932. In literary terms he published Klinische voordrachten (1900) and Levensverzekering-geneeskunde (1923). He had also written numerous articles in the Dutch Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde , the Geneeskundigen Bladen , the Dutch Maandschrift voor Geneeskunde and in German medical journals. He resigned his professorship on June 5, 1924 and retired on September 15, 1924. Then Nolen moved to The Hague, where he worked from 1925 to 1930 as director at the Red Cross Hospital and then as the city's medical advisor. He was made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion and he received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University .

Nolen married on May 31, 1883 in Sint-Oedenrode with Daniella Anna de Chaufepie (born March 31, 1856 in Sint-Oedenrode, † January 19, 1928 The Hague), the daughter of George Jean Jacques de Chaufepie (born January 29, 1856 in The Hague) 1826 in Amsterdam; † June 30, 1904 in Leiden) and his wife Henriëtte Catherine Büchler (born December 11, 1830 in Amsterdam; † May 14, 1872 Sint-Oedenrode).
