Willi Balles (born March 6, 1909 in Cochem - Sehl ; † March 29, 2000 there ) was a German athlete .

life and career

Willi Balles, born in Cochem-Sehl, achieved remarkable sporting achievements as a long-distance runner between 1925 and 1935 . During this period he was Gaumeister in the middle distance over 1500 meters and in the long distance over 3000 and 5000 meters. In the years 1931 to 1935 he took 1st place in the Middle Rhine District Championships over a distance of 5000 meters. It was also remarkable that in 1932 he ran the fifth fastest time over 5000 meters in Germany . For this he was awarded the gold pins of the German Athletics Association . Most recently he was able to win the district championships over 1000 meters in 1953.

He described his first run on a cinder track at the national sports festival in Koblenz , where he won the 3000 meter run, as a special experience . Willi Balles was still vigorous well into old age. First he was committed to keeping hiking trails in the vicinity of the city free for years, later he personally campaigned for the beautification and preservation of the old town of Cochem, especially in the area of ​​the Balduin Gate.
