Willi Freeden (born March 15, 1948 in Kaldenkirchen ) is a German mathematician.

Freeden studied mathematics at RWTH Aachen University and received his doctorate in 1975 under Claus Müller in Aachen. In 1979 he completed his habilitation there. He taught at RWTH Aachen University and Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and has been a professor at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern since 1994 . His research interests include constructive approximation theory, scientific computing and mathematical geodesy , gravitation, magnetics, gradiometry , geothermal energy , i.e. research areas that are now known as geomathematicssummarizes. He has written over a hundred publications in scientific journals and several monographs. He is also (co-) editor of several scientific journals.

For 2020, Freeden was awarded the Vening Meinesz Medal of the European Geosciences Union .
