William Crabtree (* 1610 in Broughton ( Salford ), England , † 1644 ) was an English astronomer .

After attending school in Manchester , Crabtree became financially independent through a rich marriage.

In addition to his continued occupation as a businessman, he devoted himself to astronomy with great passion . Using precise calculations, he was able to refute predictions by seasoned astronomers.

Together with Jeremiah Horrox in Lancashire , an astronomer friend, he observed the Venus transit of November 24th (Julian, December 4th Gregorian) 1639.

The asteroid (4137) Crabtree , discovered on November 24, 1970, has been named after him since 2005.
