William Demas

William Gilbert Demas , OCC, TC (born November 14, 1929 in Port of Spain ; † November 28, 1998 ibid) was a politician and financial manager from Trinidad and Tobago and from 1973 to 1974 the first Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) .

biography

Demas studied after school economics and was the beginning of the 1970 year Chairman of the Caribbean Free Trade Association ( Caribbean Free Trade Area (CARIFTA) ). In July 1973 he was President of the negotiations on the Chaguaramas Treaty , which led to the creation of CARICOM. After the founding of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as the successor organization of CARIFTA, he became the first Secretary General of CARICOM on August 1, 1973. In this capacity, he was instrumental in stabilizing the economy in the Caribbean after the attainment of sovereignty from the United Kingdom involved. In 1974 he was followed by Alister McIntyre as Secretary General of CARICOM after he himself became President of the Caribbean Development Bank and held this position until 1988. Last time was William Demas 1988-1992 Governor of the Central Bank ( Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago ) .

In 1988 he was awarded the Trinity Cross . In 1992 he was one of the first three sponsors of the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC), alongside Shridath Ramphal and Derek Walcott .
