Wilhelm Elphinstone

Wilhelm Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen

Wilhelm Elphinstone (English William Elphinstone; * 1431 in Glasgow , Scotland , † October 25, 1514 in Aberdeen , Scotland) was a statesman and bishop of Aberdeen. He is also considered the founder of the University of Aberdeen .

Wilhelm was allegedly born out of wedlock to Wilhelm Elphinstone (father of the same name) and Margaret Douglas, daughter of Sir William Douglas. After training in Glasgow, Paris and Orléans , he became an official in Glasgow and Lothian . He was considered a confidante of Jacob IV and was also a member of the Scottish Parliament.

In 1481 he became Bishop of Ross and in 1488 Bishop of Aberdeen. He is also considered a co-author of the Aberdeen Breviary .
