William Ferrers (also William de Ferrers ) (* around 1240; † before December 20, 1287 ) was an English nobleman. He was the founder of the Ferrers of Groby family .

Origin and heritage

William Ferrers came from the Anglo-Norman Ferrers family . He was the second son of William de Ferrers, 5th Earl of Derby, and his wife Margaret de Quincy. In 1251 his father gave him the estates of Fairstead , Stebbing and Woodham in Essex . From these properties he had an annual income of £ 83 in 1281. His mother inherited part of his property in 1264 after the death of her father Roger de Quincy, 2nd Earl of Winchester , Ferrers inherited Groby in Leicestershire and Newbottle in Newbottle Northamptonshire and possessions in Scotland. His older brother Robert , who after the death of their father in 1254 had inherited most of his property, gave him Leyland in Lancashire .

Rebel against the king in the war of the barons

Like his brother Robert, William Ferrers supported her cousin Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester , the leader of the aristocratic opposition to King Henry III during the Second Barons' War . In 1264 he was captured during the conquest of Northampton . In contrast to his brother, he was pardoned after the decisive victory of the royal party in July 1266 and was allowed to keep his goods. He died shortly before December 20, 1287.

Family and offspring

Ferrers' first marriage was with Anne († after February 1272). Her exact origin is unclear, she could have been a daughter of Sir Hugh Despenser , who was also an ally of Montfort. In his second marriage, Ferrers married Eleanor (also Alianore) de Lovaine († after May 1326), a daughter of Sir Matthew de Lovaine from Little Easton in Essex. After the death of Ferrers she married the Scots Sir William Douglas , Laird of Douglas († 1298), after his death Sir William Bagot († 1324) from Staffordshire .

From his first marriage he had at least one son who became his heir:

He was probably the father of Anne Ferrers († before 1300), who married John Gray, 2nd Baron Gray of Wilton .
