Hirons took part in the 1908 Olympic Games in London in the tug of war and won the gold medal with the British team. In fact, the silver and bronze medals also went to British teams. At the age of 36, Hirons was the oldest member of the gold medal team. Like all team members on all three British teams, Hirons also worked as a police officer.

Hiron's crew was called the London City Police . In the final of the competition on July 18, 1908, the London City Police beat the second-placed team, titled as the Liverpool Police Team . The clarity of the victory was emphasized in the media after the defeated Liverpool Police team had previously been confronted with allegations of manipulation during the competition.
