The Schwabinger 7 or Schwabinger Seven is a pub in the Feilitzschstraße surrounding the Münchner Freiheit . The name refers to the Schwabing district , 7 to the house number of the first location of the pub.

history

In the post-war period of the 1950s, the restaurant was set up in a makeshift backyard building in a wasteland destroyed by the bombing of Munich . In 1969, Gerd "Manila" Waldhauser took over the Schwabinger 7. The planning and execution of the demolition as part of a new building project led to protests that attracted national attention in 2011; the restaurant was re-established under the same name at 15 Feilitzschstrasse.

Establishment and reputation

The pub, furnished in a dark, solid wood interior, was largely unchanged for decades and was considered a classic location in rancid , not yet completely styled and gentrified Munich. The Mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, described it as a “drinking bar in a former building barracks”, while Spiegel wrote of a “dark pub hole”. It was called "Schwasi" by followers. After all, the author Kuno Raeber reports that the then renowned writer Ingeborg Bachmann met him in 1958 at Schwabinger 7.

The upcoming demolition of the ensemble in Feilitzschstraße in 2011 was the subject of various protest events. Some students organized a citizens' initiative via social networks , the first press conference of which in Schwabinger 7 was attended by almost 20 journalists and a large number of police officers because an illegal gathering was suspected.

Another initiative came from the cabaret organizer Till Hofmann, who runs the Munich Lach- und Schießgesellschaft and the Munich comedy theater, among other things . Numerous artists performed under the motto “Save Munich's freedom - for a cultural Schwabing ”, including Hannes Ringlstetter , Georg Eggers, Willy Michl , Michael Sailer , Moses Wolff , Sven Kemmler, Frank-Markus Barwasser alias Erwin Pelzig, Andreas Rebers and others Konstantin Wecker . An application made by Ludwig Spaenle in his capacity as a member of the responsible district committee for entry in the list of monuments was rejected by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.

Also known was an action by Bayernultras Schickeria , which demanded the preservation of Schwabinger 7 with banners during a Bundesliga game in the Allianz Arena against VfB Stuttgart .

The comedian Michael Mittermeier referred in the mirror to earlier celebrities, fights and the role in the context of the 1962 Schwabing riots . "Our children will only find nail salons where there are pubs today."

While the Lord Mayor of Munich, Christian Ude , spoke out against the preservation of the restaurant, the SPD state parliament members Hans-Ulrich Pfaffmann and Franz Maget as well as the Munich CSU campaigned for it. The restaurant formerly located at Feilitzschstraße 7 was reopened at Feilitzschstraße 15 after it was demolished with spoilage of the original furniture and furnishings.

After the demolition

Legal aftermath

A new construction project on the former site was delayed for a short period in 2012 after complaints from apartment owners from Marktstrasse, including the wife of Schwasibetreiber Waldhauser. The lawsuits were directed against a five-story new building. However, it was evident from the firewall that there had been an equally tall building here until it was destroyed in the war.

Bomb find

Video recording of the demolition

On August 27, 2012, about one meter below the surface on which the Schwabinger 7 was located, a 250-kilo aerial bomb from the Second World War was found. It was equipped with a chemical-mechanical long-term detonator that was still functional and could have detonated it at any time. When asked about this fact by the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Waldhauser replied: “Obviously we didn't celebrate wildly enough, otherwise it would have gone off. That almost casts a bad light on the 7! "

The bomb could not be defused or removed and was detonated in a controlled manner on August 28th. The subsequent detonation caused burning straw to land on the roofs of several houses. The Munich fire brigade was on duty and put out the fires before they could spread any further. Nevertheless, the explosion caused property damage in the millions.
