William Jerome
William Jerome (born September 30, 1865 in Cornwall-on-Hudson , New York , † June 25, 1932 in New York City ) was an American songwriter.
Jerome was the son of Irish immigrants. At the age of 18 he left his parents' home and initially played in minstrel shows . Then he became a music publisher. Jerome formed a songwriting team with Jean Schwartz from 1901 to 1913 ; the two created many hits, often in ragtime style. Its Chinatown, My Chinatown , is particularly well known . Other of his hits were My Irish Molly O (with Schwartz), Old King Tut , And The Green Grass Grew All Around (with Harry Von Tilzer), That Old Irish Mother of Mine (1920), Bedelia , On The Old Fall River Line ( with Harry Von Tilzer, Andrew B. Sterling), Row, Row, Row (with James V. Monaco ) and Get Out and Get Under the Moon (with Charles Tobias). His Mr. Dooley with Schwartz was interpreted in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz .
In addition to Schwartz, he worked with Walter Donaldson , Louis Hirsch , Harry Tierney and Harry Von Tilzer .
His wife Maude Nugent Jerome also wrote many songs with Irish themes, for example in 1896 Sweet Rosie O'Grady .
From 1914 to 1925 he was one of the ASCAP directors.
