William Jerome McCormack

William Jerome McCormack (born January 24, 1924 in New York City - † November 23, 2013 ) was auxiliary bishop in New York .

Life

William Jerome McCormack served in the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945 . He then studied at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany and at Christ the King Seminary . He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of New York on February 21, 1959 . In 1961 he was named assistant director of The Society for the Propagation of the Faith . In 1962 he was made Papal Camerlengo and in 1965 Honorary Prelate . He was a member of the National Council of The Society for the Propagation of the Faith until 1971 .

From 1975 to 1976 he was director of the Justice and Peace Department in the New York Archdiocese. From 1970 to 1980 he was Vice Chancellor of the Archdiocese and Secretary of the Board of Consultors . From 1975 to 1976 he was administrator of St. Joseph of the Holy Family Church in New York City near the headquarters of the United Nations . From 1980 to 1985 he served as National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith .

Pope John Paul II named him Auxiliary Bishop in New York and Titular Bishop of Nicives on December 23, 1986 . The Pope personally donated him episcopal ordination on January 6, 1987 ; Co-consecrators were Eduardo Martínez Somalo , substitute for the State Secretariat , and José Tomás Cardinal Sánchez , Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .

On October 30, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
