William Keith, 8th Earl Marischal

William Keith, 8th Earl Marischal (* around 1664 , † May 27, 1712 in London ) was a Scottish nobleman and politician .

biography

He was the son of George Keith, 7th Earl Marischal († 1694), and Lady Mary Hay († 1667), daughter of George Hay, 2nd Earl of Kinnoull († 1644). When his father died in 1694, he inherited his title as 8th Earl Marischal , 8th Lord Keith and 7th Lord Altrie . The hereditary court office of the Marshal of Scotland as well as the hereditary dignity of the chief of Clan Keith was connected with the titles .

In 1701 he was admitted to the Scottish Privy Council . As Tory he campaigned against the unification of the kingdoms of England and Scotland .

He sympathized with the Jacobites and was born in 1705 by the exiled titular king Jacob III. accepted as Knight Companion in the thistle order . During the Jacobite Rebellion of 1708 he was imprisoned by the British Crown. However, after its failure he managed to obtain his release and from 1710 to 1712 to be a Scottish representative peer member of the British House of Lords .

Marriage and offspring

Around 1690 he married Lady Mary Drummond (1675-1729), daughter of James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth (around 1649-1716). He had four children with her:
