William Lanne (* 1835 ; † March 3, 1869 in Oyster Cove , Tasmania ), also called King Billy or William Laney , was the last "purebred" Tasmanian , an Aborigine . He was the third husband of Truganini , one of the last "purebred" female Tasmanians.

Life

Lanne was deported with his family to Wyballena on Flinders Island in 1842. His family was one of the last families to be brought to Wyballena. In 1847 the reservation was given up and he came with the last 47 surviving Aborigines to a settlement in Oyster Cove near what is now Hobart . In 1851 he went to Hobart and was hired on a sailing ship in 1855.

Lanne died of cholera and dysentery in Tasmania. His skeleton was taken to the Royal College of Surgeons in London , where Dr. Lodewyk Crowther investigates. At his funeral, it was found that his head was missing, which was later not found.
