Career
William Dewart attended public schools in his home country and in Harrisburg . He then graduated from the Dickinson Preparatory School in Carlisle and in 1839 Princeton College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1843, he began to work in Sunbury in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1845 and 1846 he was Mayor of Sunbury. He also headed the school committee there. In 1852, 1856, 1860 and 1884 he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions . In 1854 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress.
In the congressional elections of 1856 Dewart was elected in the eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded James Hepburn Campbell on March 4, 1857 . Since he was defeated by his predecessor Campbell in 1858, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . While serving as a congressman, Dewart chaired the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business .
After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced again as a lawyer in Sunbury, where he died on April 19, 1888.
