William McClelland

William McClelland (born March 2, 1842 in Mount Jackson , Lawrence County , Pennsylvania , †  February 7, 1892 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William McClelland attended Westminster College in New Wilmington . During the Civil War he served in the Union Army for four years . After the war, he continued his education at Allegheny College in Meadville . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1870, he began to work in Mount Jackson in this profession. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1870 congressional election , McClelland was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Joseph Benton Donley on March 4, 1871 . Since he was not confirmed in 1872, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1873 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, McClelland practiced law again. He died in Harrisburg on February 7, 1892 and was buried in Pittsburgh .
