William Montgomery (1859)

William Montgomery (born April 11, 1818 in Canton , Washington County , Pennsylvania , †  April 28, 1870 in Washington , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1861 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Montgomery had a good primary education. In 1839 he graduated from Washington College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1841, he began to work in this profession in Washington. In 1845 he was also a district attorney there. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1854 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the congressional elections of 1856 Montgomery was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Jonathan Knight on March 4, 1857 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1861. These were shaped by the events in the immediate run-up to the civil war . In 1860 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, William Montgomery practiced as a lawyer again. In 1866 he tried unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on April 28, 1870 in Washington, Pennsylvania, where he was also buried.
