Jesse Lazear
Jesse Lazear (born December 12, 1804 in Greene County , Pennsylvania , † September 2, 1877 in Baltimore County , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1865 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Jesse Lazear received limited schooling. After that he worked for a short time as a teacher and in trade. Between 1829 and 1832 he was employed in the Greene County administration. Between 1835 and 1867, with the interruption of his time as a congressman, he was a cashier at the Farmers & Drovers' Bank in Waynesburg . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .
In the congressional elections of 1860 Lazear was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded William Montgomery on March 4, 1861 . After re-election in the 24th district of his state, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1865 . Between 1861 and 1863, Lazear was chairman of the Committee to Control Public Property Spending. His time as a member of parliament was marked by the events of the civil war . In 1864 he renounced another candidacy.
In August 1866, Lazear attended the National Union Convention in Philadelphia as a delegate . From 1867 he lived on his Windsor Mill Farm in Baltimore County, Maryland. Between 1871 and 1874 he was president of the Baltimore & Powhatan Railroad Co. He died on September 2, 1877 on his estate in Maryland.
