William Moore (politician, around 1735)

William Moore (born around 1735 in Philadelphia , Province of Pennsylvania , † July 24, 1793 ) was an American politician . Between 1781 and 1782 he was President of Pennsylvania .

The exact date of birth and place of death of William Moore are unknown. He was born around 1735 in then British Philadelphia and, like his father, became a successful trader. In 1765 he joined the protest against the British Stamp Act . Even so, he was nowhere near as radical as some of his contemporaries when it came to relations with motherland England . In 1776 he was elected to the Pennsylvania Security Council and in 1778 he was elected to the Continental Congress . However, he refused this mandate. Instead, he became a member of the Pennsylvania Governing Council.

In 1779 he became Vice President of Pennsylvania. This office corresponded roughly to that of the later lieutenant governor . Moore held this position between November 11, 1779 and November 14, 1781. He was then elected President himself. He exercised this mandate between November 15, 1781 and November 7, 1782. His new office corresponded to the later created office of governor of Pennsylvania.

After his one-year term ended, Moore became a judge on an appeals court. In 1784 he was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Assembly. In the same year he became a director at the Bank of Pennsylvania. He was also a curator at the University of Pennsylvania from 1784 to 1789 . He died on July 24, 1793.
