William Mowat

Sir William Mowat († between August and November 1327 in Norham Castle ) was a Scottish nobleman and conspirator.

William Mowart was a knight with possessions at Cromarty in Ross-shire . During the Scottish War of Independence , he first fought on the Scottish side. In March 1304 he was one of the remaining rebels who submitted to the English king. When Robert Bruce rose to the rank of King of Scots in 1306, thus continuing the war against the English, Mowat continued to support the English. In 1312 he had belonged to the English occupation of Dundee when the city was conquered by the Scots under Bruce. The captured Mowat lost his possessions to the Earl of Ross . Eventually Mowat submitted to Robert Bruce around 1314, whereupon he was released. In December 1318 Bruce named him together with William Soules as a member of a Scottish negotiating delegation that should travel to England. In October 1319 he was still in Newcastle as envoy . In April 1320 he was one of the barons who sealed the Declaration of Arbroath . Nevertheless, Mowat had apparently supported the Soules conspiracy and had to flee to England after its discovery in the summer of 1320. Robert Bruce declared his remaining possessions in Stirlingshire forfeited. Before May 20, 1321 Mowat was again in the service of the English crown. According to the account of the chronicler Thomas Gray , whose father was the English commandant of Norham Castle , Mowat died during the siege of the castle by a Scottish army under Robert the Bruce in late summer or autumn 1327.
