After returning to London, he received a licentiate from the Royal College of Physicians , whose fellow he became in 1591. 1595 and 1597 to 1600 he was censor of the Royal College of Physicians (responsible for medical admission) and he was several times president (first 1609) of the college, whose privileges he successfully defended. In 1596 he became a lecturer in anatomy for the Barber Surgeon Company of Surgeons and dissected these corpses. In 1602 he also became a lecturer in anatomy for the medical profession. He was one of only 31 doctors of the college admitted to London, was the family doctor of Robert Cecil and one of the four doctors of Queen Elizabeth I. He was brought in by Anne of Denmark , the wife of James I, when her daughter Mary and Prince Henry fell ill , but could not prevent their death.

He made a generous donation for St. John's College in Oxford and is buried in its chapel.
