William Ramsay, 1st Earl of Dalhousie

William Ramsay, 1st Earl of Dalhousie, 2nd Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie (* after 1602 ; † November 1672 ) was a Scottish politician and soldier.

He was the eldest son of George Ramsay, 1st Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie and Margaret Douglas. He grew up on the family's estate in Carrington , Midlothian . With a contract of October 3, 1617 and for a dowry of 20,000 marks , he married Margaret Carnegie, daughter of David Carnegie, 1st Earl of Southesk and his wife Margaret. From this marriage came with George the later title heir. After his first wife died in April 1661, Ramsay married the widowed Jocosa Apsley, daughter of Alan Apsley and his second wife Anne. Overall, Ramsay was the father of three daughters and four sons.

Life

1617 and 1621 he was a member of the Scottish Parliament and took care of the interests of the Montrose district. When his father died, he inherited him as Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie . On June 29, 1633 he was awarded the title of 1st Earl of Dalhousie . As a member of the army of the Covenanters , he built a mounted regiment, as its commander he took part in the battles of Marston Moor in 1644 and Philiphaugh in 1645. Despite this involvement, he later supported Charles II. In 1646 he took on the role of sheriff in Edinburghshire .
