William René Shea

William René Shea (born May 16, 1937 in Québec ) is a Canadian historian of science .

Shea studied at Cambridge University and was at Harvard University , taught at the University of Ottawa , McGill University and the University of Strasbourg before becoming Professor of History of Science at the University of Padua in 2003 as holder of the Cattedra Galileiana .

He is particularly concerned with Galileo Galilei and the Scientific Revolution in the early modern period.

He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada , the Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea . He was President of the International Academy of the History of Science and the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science. In 1993 he received the Koyré Medal .
