William Seward Burroughs I.
William Seward Burroughs I. (born January 28, 1857 in Rochester (New York) , † September 14, 1898 in Citronelle , Alabama ) was an American entrepreneur, founder of the Burroughs Corporation and inventor of an adding machine .
Burroughs was the son of a mechanic and grew up in Auburn, New York . He attended high school and was then a bank clerk at his father's request, although he himself had a tendency towards precision engineering. There he had monotonous addition tasks in the accounting department and began to consider the possibility of building a mechanical calculating machine that worked better and more reliably than the machines in the bank. After seven years at the bank, he resigned for health reasons in the early 1880s and, on the advice of his doctor, went to warmer St. Louis. This is where his adding machine was built and in 1886 he founded the American Arithmometer Company, named the Burroughs Adding Machine Company after its founder after moving to Detroit in 1904 .
Burroughs was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame .
He was the grandfather of the writer William S. Burroughs .
He is buried in St. Louis.
