William Stevenson Hoyte

William Stevenson Hoyte (born September 22, 1844 in Sidmouth , † July 2, 1917 ibid) was an English organist , composer and music teacher .

Hoyte lost his father at a young age and was unable to finance orderly music lessons. He was largely self-taught and at the age of thirteen became the organist at St. Paul's in Hampstead. He later took occasional lessons from John Goss and George Cooper . In addition to several other positions (at King's Lynn , Bow Common , St. Mattew's and others) he held the position of organist at All Saints Church for many years . He taught at the Royal Academy of Music (from 1888), the Guildhall School of Music (from 1893) and onRoyal College of Music and received a PhD from Randall Thomas Davidson , Archbishop of Canterbury , in 1904. He composed some choral works and organ pieces, of which the Scherzo in E flat major became well known. Lynnwood Farnam and Healey Willan were among his students .
