William Swan Garvin

William Swan Garvin (born July 25, 1806 in Mercer , Mercer County , Pennsylvania , †  February 20, 1883 there ) was an American politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Garvin enjoyed an academic education. For over 50 years he edited the Western Press newspaper in Mercer . Between 1837 and 1841 he was a postman in his hometown. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1844 Garvin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Samuel Hays on March 4, 1845 . Until March 3, 1847, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War . During his tenure in Congress, Garvin chaired the Public Property Committee.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked as a Flour Inspector in Pittsburgh . Between 1867 and 1869 he was again the postman of the city of Mercer. He also continued to work as a journalist. William Garvin died on February 20, 1883 in Mercer, where he was also buried.
