William Vandivert

William "Bill" Vandivert (born August 16, 1912 in Evanston, Illinois , USA ; † December 1, 1989 ) was an American photographer and founding member of the Magnum Photos photo agency .

Vandivert studied chemistry at Beloit College from 1928 to 1930 and at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1930 to 1935 . From 1935 Vandivert began to take his first photos; u. a. for the Herald Examiner in Chicago. A little later he works as a permanent employee for the famous Life magazine . In December 1938 Vandivert moved to London , England to work for Life in Europe. Until 1945 he reported on the Second World War in Europe. Here he met the photographer Robert Capa , who can win him over for his idea of ​​an independent photo agency. Vandivert left Life magazine in 1946.

Together with his wife Rita Vandivert , he became a founding member of the Magnum Photos photo agency in 1947 . However, both of them left Magnum the following year. William continued his career as a freelance photographer. The Vandiverts are known for a series of nature documentaries .
