William Vaux

Sir William Vaux of Harrowden († May 4, 1471 in Tewkesbury ) was an English knight .

Life

He was the son of William Vaux († 1460) and Maud Lucy. He was a Knight Bachelor and lived on the Harrowden Estate in Northamptonshire and owned numerous other royal fiefs in other counties.

During the Wars of the Roses he was loyal to the House of Lancaster and King Henry VI. His wife Catherine Peniston was a lady-in-waiting of the Queen Consort Margaret of Anjou . He fought at the Battle of Towton in March 1461 . As a result of the defeat in this battle, Edward IV was able to ascend the throne of the House of York and William Vaux was therefore attained on November 4, 1461 and his property was expropriated.

He himself fled into exile in France with Queen Margaret of Anjou . In 1471 he was in the retinue of Margaret of Anjou, who returned to England with an army. He fought for Margaret and the House of Lancaster on May 4, 1471 at the Battle of Tewkesbury . The battle ended in heavy defeat. Sir William Vaux was killed in battle, his wife and Margaret of Anjou were captured by the Yorkists.

His son and heir, Nicholas Vaux, could not until 1485 under King Richard III. effect the retroactive lifting of the ostracism of 1461 and got the family's lands back.

He was married to Catherine Peniston, daughter of Gregory Peniston from Courtesello in Piedmont . He had two children with her:
