William Wentworth, 1st Baronet

Sir William Wentworth, 1st Baronet (baptized July 3, 1562 - September 10, 1614 ) was an English nobleman .

He was the son and heir of Sir Thomas Wentworth († 1587), lord of Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire , from his second marriage to Margaret Gascoigne, the heir to William Gascoigne, lord of Gawthorpe in Yorkshire.

In 1601 he held the office of High Sheriff of Yorkshire. On June 20, 1611 he acquired the hereditary title of Baronet , of Wentworth-Woodhouse in the County of York, which King James I then awarded for a fixed fee.

He married Anne Atkins († 1611), daughter of the barrister Robert Atkins, lord of Stowell in Gloucestershire . With her he had eight sons and three daughters:

  • Elizabeth Wentworth (1603–1661), ⚭ 1636 James Dillon, 3rd Earl of Roscommon .
