William de Mandeville (constable)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William de Mandeville († 1105/1116) was an English knight from the House of Mandeville and constable of the Tower of London .

He was the son and heir to Geoffrey de Mandeville . Like his father, he was a constable of the Tower of London and this at a time when the Tower was the first (as far as known) with Ranulf Flambard to house a political prisoner. Flambard's escape in February 1101 had clear consequences for William: King Henry I confiscated the central part of William's property in Essex .

William was presumably married to Margarete, the daughter of Eudo FitzHubert ( Dapifer ) and Rohese de Clare (the daughter of Richard de Bienfaite ). Her son Geoffrey got the confiscated property back.
