William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon († September 10, 1217 ) was a son of Baldwin de Redvers, 1st Earl of Devon and Adelise Baluun. William de Redvers is also called William de Vernon because he grew up in Vernon Castle in Normandy , the seat of his grandfather Richard de Redvers .

William de Redvers took part in the second coronation of King Richard the Lionheart in 1194 , and later was one of the supporters of his successor Johann Ohneland - which did not protect him from the fact that the king allowed his mercenary leader Falkes de Bréauté to kidnap the earl's widowed daughter-in-law, forcing marriage and appropriating their dowry.

William de Redvers was married to Mabile de Beaumont, daughter of Robert de Beaumont , the 1204 deposed Count of Meulan from the House of Beaumont . Through her mother, Mabile was a granddaughter of Reginald de Dunstanville, 1st Earl of Cornwall .
