Model of the F121

The Williams F121 (manufacturer designation: WR36-1 ) was a turbofan engine that was developed for the AGM-136 Tacit Rainbow cruise missile .

development

The F121 was developed for the AGM-136 Tacit Rainbow in the early 1980s and has some rare design features. It was only intended for the use of cruise missiles and accordingly designed for a high cost reduction with a correspondingly short service life. Nevertheless, the F121 had a relatively long lifespan of three hours for a cruise missile engine (the AGM-136 should be able to remain in the target area for several hours).

The engine completed its maiden flight on July 30, 1984. In 1991, the AGM-136 program was discontinued, with the result that the F121 was no longer developed. Only in 2000 some prototypes were used again for fuel tests in the “Naval Air Warfare Center” of the “Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake”.
