Willibald Mayerl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willibald Mayerl (born August 6, 1896 in Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. , † March 17, 1977 in Hohndorf ) was a German miner and painter.

Mayerl was born the son of a Hauer who immigrated to Saxony from Austria-Hungary. His mother was a seamstress from Slovenia. He attended elementary school in Niederwürschnitz and then became a day boy in the Lugau trust shaft. At the age of 16 he drove in as a promoter. After attending the Freiberg mountain school for two years, he was a fully trained miner. After military service in the First World War, he attended the engineering school in Mittweida and became a Steiger and Markscheider in the Gersdorfer coal mining association.

Without any academic training, he began to paint in his spare time from around 1928. In 1930 he exhibited some of his pictures for the first time. Numerous other exhibitions followed. He left about 800 paintings with the signature "WML".

In 1976 Karlheinz Mund made a documentary about Willibald Mayerl under the title: WML - Steiger or painter .

reception

"His large-format, dark-colored and expressive pictures have the life of the miners as their subject matter. The rough realism of the paintings is documentary. In terms of style, Mayerl's painting is a folk-artistic, naive counterpart to proletarian-revolutionary art."
