Willie Walker (* 1945 in New Jersey ) is an American video and media artist .

life and work

William Walker, also called Willie Boy Walker, was born in New Jersey and lives in Oakland , California . Willie Walker studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1969 . He continued his studies at California College of the Arts and graduated with a master's degree .

Willie Walker calls himself:

"... the world's first video disk-jockey ... a collector of video oddity, art and humor or anything you wouldn't see on everyday television."

Willie Walker became known with the Weekend Tapes (1972), a collection of actions and people that parody both the themes and forms of commercial television, advertising television and its pseudo-realities. "The World of Willie Boy Walker and his Friends" is a two-hour video show, a collection of oddities presented by Willie Boy, the first "video disk jockey," like-minded and interested groups.

In Tap Dance , Willie Walker plays with the supplementary knowledge of the viewer. He performs a tap dance in which only his upper body can be seen in the picture. The noises for this are made with the mouth.

In 1976, a solo exhibition of Willie Walker's videos was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art . In 1977 Willie Walker took part in documenta 6 in Kassel .
