Willy Haeberli (born June 17, 1925 in Zurich ) is a Swiss - American experimental nuclear physicist .

Haeberli received his doctorate in 1952 at the University of Basel and was a post-doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin – Madison until 1954 . From 1954 to 1956 he was visiting professor at Duke University , 1956 Assistant Professor, 1959 Associate Professor and from 1961 Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been RG Herb Professor of Physics there since 1977 and Steenbock Professor of Natural Sciences since 1984 . In 1961 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

He is known for working in nuclear spectroscopy with polarized targets and projectiles. Among other things, he studied the structure of the deuteron and parity violation in nucleon-nucleon systems. Recently he was involved in experiments with polarized systems (spin physics) at the RHIC of the Brookhaven National Laboratory .

In 1979 he received the Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics and he received two Humboldt Research Awards (1982, 1991). In 1995 he received the Hilldale Award from the University of Wisconsin. In 2002 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences and he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1988). He is an honorary member of the International Spin Physics Committee.
