Willy Oertel

Willy Oertel (* 1868 ; † 1920 ) was a German painter, writer and cabaret artist .

Oertel published in the magazine Jugend and created his own books, such as Der Cylinderhut - his life, his deeds and sufferings (Leipzig 1895), which was kept in the humorous style of Wilhelm Busch and which saw numerous editions. In addition, he illustrated the books of others, for example the volume of poems Nebensonnen by Maurice Reinhold von Stern . Postage stamps were designed by him and many of his pictures were widely used in the form of the "artist postcards" popular at the time.

He is particularly well known as the co-founder of “ Die Elf Scharfrichter ”, Germany's first political cabaret, which appeared in 1901.

Oertel belonged to the Munich artist milieu and was associated with the Munich cosmopolitan people . In 1911 he delivered drafts for Stollwerck collectors' pictures on behalf of the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck . a. for the Stollwerck scrapbook No. 12. The 1913 novel Mr. Dames Notes or Incidents from a Strange District by Franziska zu Reventlow , who also belonged to the scene, paints a vivid and humorous picture of the Schwabing situation and zeitgeist under encrypted personal names.

Willy Oertel was the great-uncle of Kurt Oertel, an old Germanist working at the University of Kiel .
