Wilmar (Brandenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilmar , also Wilmann (born before 1133; died 1173 ) was bishop of the diocese of Brandenburg from around 1161 to 1173 .

Life

He was a Premonstratensian in the Leitzkau Abbey . As a scholastic he can be proven there in 1133. He succeeded the first Provost Lambert in his office in 1156.

He was elected bishop by the Leitzkau Monastery, which had been made a provisional cathedral chapter. It was consecrated by Archbishop Wichmann von Seeburg . He is verifiable as a bishop at the Magdeburg General Synod of 1161. He was familiar with the situation of the diocese through his previous activities and continued the objectives of his predecessor Wigger.

Until now, the Premonstratensian Foundation in Leitzkau had the function of a cathedral chapter. In 1161 Wilmar made the Parduin convent a cathedral chapter of the Brandenburg diocese. He gave the Chapter a number of goods. Another archdeaconate for the eastern part of the diocese was set up at the bishopric . From Friedrich I he obtained a document in which not only all privileges of the diocese were compiled, but which also confirmed the entire possession of the diocese. In 1165 he ordered the move of the cathedral chapter to the cathedral island and on October 11, 1165 laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new cathedral .

Wilmar was a supporter of King Friedrich I and often stayed near the court. He was present in Lodi in June 1161 when the king confirmed the previous rights of the Cappenberg monastery . In Fulda he was a witness in 1165 when the king took the newly founded Frauenbreitungen monastery under his protection. In 1170 he was present at the consecration of the new cathedral in Havelberg .
