Move Windhoek (until November 13, 2016 Städtische Busdienst Windhoek , English City of Windhoek Municipal Bus Services ) is the city offer for bus transport in Windhoek , Namibia . It was founded in 1958. As the Bus Services Division, the bus service is a separate department within the transport authority of the City of Windhoek .
history
The bus system takes care of the public supply within Windhoek as a pure commuter bus system at peak times, but plays only a subordinate role in daily life after taxis and minibuses. Also due to the low frequency, the few routes and the poor equipment, the service was not very popular. A privatization proposed in 2005 and aimed at increasing competitiveness was rejected by the city. On September 1, 2010, the bus service received 20 brand new buses. The expansion to a fleet of 100 buses is planned by 2015.
The 79 buses serve 11 routes and sometimes take on special services. Among other things, they serve as school buses . Vehicles are on average more than 20 years old, with the latest models dating from 1997.
Modernization and expansion
In June 2015, the city administration announced that a new bus system would be developed on the basis of the Sustainable Urban Transport Master Plan for Windhoek including Rehoboth, Okahandja and Hosea Kutako International Airport , which was created in cooperation with GIZ . A first test track went into operation in the same month. In addition, 20 to 30 modern low-floor buses of the brands MAN and Mercedes-Benz with a value of 80 million Namibian dollars will be purchased from November 2015. In November, the first of 26 low-floor buses was presented in Windhoek. The first low-floor buses went into service in February 2016. In addition, operations began on new lines that are to replace the old bus lines in the medium term.
On November 14, 2016, the bus system was converted for the first time to 14 routes on which only modern low-floor buses are to be used. For the first time, a local transport system is to be offered that operates according to fixed timetables and frequency. It was discontinued after two weeks and never resumed.
