Winfried March

Winfried March (born July 13, 1958 in Offenbach ) is a German medic. He conducts research in the field of epidemiology and genetics of heart, vascular and kidney diseases as well as lipid metabolic disorders with the aim of preventing the development of these diseases.

Life

March studied medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. Since 2013 he has been university professor for medical-chemical laboratory diagnostics at the Karl Franzens University in Graz and an associated scientist at the Medical Clinic V ( nephrology , hypertensiology , rheumatology , endocrinology , diabetology ) of the Mannheim Medical Faculty at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He also heads the Synlab Academy for Medical Training .

The aim of Winfried März's research is the prevention of cardiovascular diseases . He is active in various international committees as an independent scientific advisor and deputy chairman of the DACH Society for Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases eV He has so far organized around 30 multicenter epidemiological and clinical studies and supervised laboratory technology and set up several biobanks .

One of the first biobanks for research and prevention of coronary heart disease in Germany was created under his leadership from the results of the LURIC study. LURIC stands for Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health. Between July 1997 and March 2002, a total of 3,808 people took part in LURIC. The study offers up-to-date results to this day, as advances in genetic engineering allow ever more refined analyzes, for example of risk factors and individual defense processes.

März is the author and co-author of around 550 original scientific papers in international journals on the subjects of laboratory medicine, hormone and metabolism as well as cardiovascular research. He is represented in PubMed with more than 500 entries, with more than 800 in the Web of Science . In addition, he has written around 50 reviews, 30 books and around 800 conference papers.
