Synlab ( spelling : SYNLAB) is a provider of human and veterinary laboratory services as well as environmental analyzes, which emerged in 2015 from the merger of the two laboratory service providers Labco and Synlab. The Synlab Group has its headquarters in Munich and is represented in more than 35 countries with over 19,000 employees. In 2018, the Synlab Group achieved sales of around EUR 2.0 billion.

In total, more than 400 laboratories belong to the Synlab Hub and Spoke laboratory network. The network includes, among other things, two European reference laboratories near Stuttgart and near Barcelona as well as 31 central laboratories, each of which is specialized and also carries out tests for other laboratories in the network. The majority of the network is made up of regional and emergency laboratories.

Management

The CEO of the Synlab Group is Mathieu Floreani, who moved to Synlab from DHL in 2018. The previous CEO and founder of the German Synlab branch, Bartl Wimmer , retired from this position at the end of March 2018. Other members are Santiago Valor (Chief Medical Officer), Sami Badarani (Chief Financial Officer), Robert Steinwander (Chief Operating Officer), Luis Vieira (Chief Strategy Officer) and Stuart Quin (Chief Commercial Officer).

history

Together with his partners, Bartl Wimmer founded Synlab GmbH in Augsburg in 1998 as an "Association of Independent Laboratory Doctors". In 2010 Synlab took over Futurelab and Fleming Labs, thus laying the foundation for numerous other acquisitions. In October 2015, Synlab was bought by the private equity firm Cinven .

Labco SA was founded in 2004 by a group of French biologists and at that time comprised nine laboratories. In 2007 Labco took over General Lab in Spain and Portugal. In the following years Labco took over other laboratories. In August 2015, Labco was also bought by the private equity firm Cinven.

Since the end of 2015, both companies have been operating together under the name Synlab Group. Synlab then grew strongly by taking over other laboratory companies.

As part of the COVID-19 pandemic , Synlab received an order from UEFA from August 2020 to test players, officials and referees. Synlab was named “UEFA Laboratory Diagnostics Provider 2020/2021” for this purpose. This order is important because Synlab is the only laboratory company in Europe that is active in more than 30 countries and can therefore only fulfill such a large international order.

owner

In August 2015, the private equity company Cinven took over the French laboratory service provider Labco. In October 2015, Cinven acquired a majority stake in Synlab and merged the two companies to form the Synlab Group. Prior to this, the private equity company BC Partners was the majority owner of synlab. In December 2016, Novo A / S acquired over ten percent of Synlab, which was increased to approximately 20 percent in 2017.
