from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralf Bartenschlager (born May 29, 1958 in Mannheim ) is a German virologist and professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Live and act

Bartenschlager grew up in simple circumstances with his grandparents in a working-class suburb of Mannheim. After graduating from high school, he worked as a police officer for four years. He began studying biology at Heidelberg University in 1981. In 1987 he finished his studies. In 1990 he did his doctorate with Heinz Schaller at the Center for Molecular Biology in Heidelberg on the topic of structural and functional characterization of the P protein in hepatitis B viruses . For his doctoral thesis he was awarded the "Prize for the best dissertation of the Society for Molecular Biological Research Heidelberg". First he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Heidelberg until 1991 , until he then switched to the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche , which is based in Basel. He worked for the pharmaceutical company until 1993. There he began his scientific studies on Hepatitis C - Virus .

At the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz habilitation he 1999. His professorial dissertation had the studies on the molecular biology of the hepatitis C virus - implications for the development of antiviral therapy concepts on the subject. He then became a group leader at the Institute of Virology.

Since 2002 he has been a professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg. There he heads the "Molecular Virology" department at the Center for Infectious Diseases. Between 2002 and 2012 he received an endowed professorship from the Chica and Heinz Schaller Foundation .

Since 2005 he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Society for Virology . Between 2009 and 2015 he was also a member of the specialist college for virology of the German Research Foundation . Since 2013 he has been a member of the advisory board of the European Society for Virology and is co-coordinator of the "TTU Hepatitis" at the German Center for Infection Research .

At the German Cancer Research Center , he has headed the “Virus ‐ Associated Carcinogenesis” department since 2014 and is spokesperson for the research focus “Infection, Inflammation and Cancer”.

Research priorities

Bartenschlager's research focuses primarily on the hepatitis C virus , but also the hepatitis B virus . These viruses are among the main pathogens in acute and chronic liver diseases and are strongly associated with the development of liver cancer . In addition, Bartenschlager is still working on flaviviruses , especially the dengue virus , the cause of dengue fever . With the hepatitis viruses as well as with the dengue virus, he made important contributions to the understanding of the life cycles of the viruses. His pioneering work on the intracellular replication of the hepatitis C virus and the development of an experimental system ( replicon system) that allows virus genomes to be replicated in cell culture are considered to be the key foundations for the development of completely new classes of highly effective drugs against hepatitis C. . In recognition of this achievement, he was awarded the prestigious Robert Koch Prize (together with Charles M. Rice) in 2015.
