Live and act

Müller studied medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1950 , interrupted by an exmatriculation due to participation in activities on June 17, 1953. In 1958 he began his training as an ophthalmologist at the Medical Academy in Erfurt . There he set up a department for electrophysiology of the eye which, in close cooperation with the Technical University of Ilmenau, gained an international reputation and was able to organize a world congress of the ISCEV in Erfurt. Equipped with the first surgical microscope from Zeiss Jena, eye microsurgery began in 1968 under the direction of Müller in Erfurt , and vitreous body surgery in 1976. Müller was able to achieve a one-year visiting professorship in Baltimore (USA). He has written books and other publications on slit lamp photography, gonioscopy and retinal detachments in the eye. A special concern for Müller was the further training of ophthalmologists, for example in the "Erfurt ophthalmologist talk". In the early 1990s, Müller became chief physician at the clinic for eye diseases at the clinic.

Müller had a tense relationship with GDR politics . At the beginning he worked with the Democratic Awakening and initiated the political turnaround at the Medical Academy Erfurt from November 1989. He was head of a working group on democracy at the MAE and was the editor in charge of the "Hochschulzeitung", the former SED-run "Akademie-Spiegel". Müller fought particularly for the preservation of the academy as a university, which, however, despite a positive evaluation by the Science Council, was converted by the state government of Thuringia into a hospital with maximum care at the end of 1993.

After his retirement, Müller was able to devote himself fully to his artistic inclinations. Until February 2020 he showed self-made wooden sculptures, bronze sculptures and watercolors in his very small gallery on the Krämerbrücke . He has also written hundreds of poems, some of which are illustrated with photos of his works.

Müller has been married to the theater director Hildegard Müller for over 50 years . The marriage resulted in two daughters.
