Winfried Remy (born March 21, 1924 in Breslau ; † December 31, 1995 ) was a German paleobotanist . He was a professor at the University of Münster .

Remy grew up in Berlin and studied geology at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he was a student of Walther Gothan and received his doctorate on palaeobotany in Tübingen (for political reasons he was unable to do his doctorate in East Berlin at the time). The subject of the dissertation was fructifications of pteridosperms. In 1954 he succeeded Gothan in Berlin as head of the Institute for Paleobotany at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin. After the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, he moved to the West and went to work as a lecturer at the University of Münster, where he received a professorship in 1965 and in 1968 became head of the newly founded research center for paleobotany. In 1989 he retired, but remained scientifically active.

Remy worked and published a lot with his wife, the paleobotanist Renate Remy. His work focused on paleobotany of Carboniferous and Permian ( biostratigraphy , fructifications , in situ pollen and spores, anatomy). From the mid-1970s, his research focus shifted to the first land plants in the Devonian ( Rhynie Chert in Scotland and Germany).

He was an honorary member of the paleobotanical section of the Botanical Society of America, which awards an award in his honor and that of Renate Remy, and a corresponding member of the Botanical Society of America. He received the first Jongmans Medal, a Dutch award in paleobotany.

From 1966 to 1991 he published the Argumenta Palaeobotanica series .
