Angle school

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winkelschulen , also known as Heckschulen or Klippschulen in Northern Germany , were privately organized schools that were not officially recognized and that emerged in the Netherlands and Germany since the late Middle Ages . The first corner schools emerged in cities and larger trading centers. The visit was chargeable and could be paid for in cash or in kind.

Everyday school life

The teaching staff (so-called Winkelmeister ) generally had neither subject-specific nor pedagogical knowledge. Correspondingly, angle schools primarily imparted very elementary basic knowledge through memorization , especially basic knowledge of reading and writing. The use of corporal punishment was predominant and accepted (as in the public schools of the time) . The lack of space and the juxtaposition of several age groups also shaped the picture.

Historical development of the angle schools

In the 18th century, questions of upbringing and education gained increasing importance on the part of the state. Above all, the need for technically and commercially better trained officials increased . In order to guarantee a qualitatively uniform basic education, the last corner schools in Germany were closed from 1800 and replaced by public schools.

Bad reputation

The derogatory assessment of the Klippschule stems from the time when Winkel and Klippschulen were already out of date and in decline. Above all, the use of corporal punishment and the imparting of elementary knowledge through stubborn memorization are criticized. On the other hand, however, it must be recognized that these private schools in modern times certainly contributed to the literacy of the bourgeoisie of that time - and to a lesser extent also of the farmers.
