Winkie Direko

Isabella Winkie Direko (born November 27, 1929 in Bloemfontein ; † February 17, 2012 there ) was a South African politician. She was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and was Prime Minister of the Free State Province from June 15, 1999 to April 26, 2004 .

Winkie Direko made her teacher examination in 1948 and was assistant teacher from 1949, from 1955 teacher at various high schools. In 1975 she became assistant principal and from 1985 to 1994 she became principal of a high school. Direko had connections with the ANC early on and was a member of its youth league and women's organization . She played an important role in raising political awareness among young activists in the Botshabelo township near Bloemfontein , especially the so-called Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela , who were her students until the group went into exile in 1960.

After the end of apartheid , she became one of the first women senators in 1996 and later a member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP). In 1999 she became Prime Minister of the Free State Province. She then moved to the National Assembly in 2004 . There she mainly dealt with women's and social issues.

Direko died on February 17, 2012 of complications from a stroke .
