Winonaite

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winonaites belong to the class of primitive achondrites (meteorites) and are fine-grained extraterrestrial rocks consisting predominantly of pyroxene and magnesium- rich olivine , troilite and nickel - iron- metal. The chemistry and the oxygen isotope ratio relate Winonaite to silicate inclusions in iron meteorites of class IAB . Both likely stem from a differentiated asteroid that was destroyed when the iron core and silicate-rich crust formed.

The most famous Winonait and at the same time namesake of the whole class is that of Winona (Arizona) in the United States . It was found during the excavation of ruins of the Sinagua culture in Elden-Pueblo in 1928 and apparently served there as a cult object .
