Winston Halapua

Winston Halapua (* 1945 in Tonga ) is an Anglican clergyman and bishop of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia since 2010 .

Life

Halapua, a son of the pastor and future bishop Fine Halapua , studied Anglican theology in New Zealand. After ordination in 1972, he completed postgraduate studies in Birmingham . From 1977 he worked in Suva , the capital of Fiji , first as parish priest , then as director of St John's College . He studied sociology while working and received his doctorate in this subject at the University of the South Pacific in 2002 .

In 1996 he took over the position of director of the Theological College of the Diocese of Polynesia in Auckland . At the same time he lectured at the theological department of the University of Auckland . In 2005 he was ordained Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Polynesia. After the death of longtime Archbishop Jabez Bryce in February 2010, Halapua was elected as his successor in May. He is one of the three Archbishops of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.

As an author, Halapua wrote several works on religion, politics and the military in the island state of Fiji .
