The Winterthurer Fasnacht is the carnival of Winterthur and can look back on a tradition dating back to the 15th century. It is the largest carnival in the canton of Zurich .

history

The first reports about the Winterthur Carnival came from the 15th and 16th centuries, when carnival groups from cities such as Constance , Stein am Rhein , Frauenfeld , Rapperswil and Schaffhausen were received and fed by the mayor and the councilors. Winterthur groups also attended carnival parades in other cities. With the Reformation , as in other cities, carnival was forbidden. It is said from the 18th century that there was a committee that put together a carnival parade.

There was an organized carnival for the first time in 1928 and since 1929 the carnival has been organized by a committee. On January 11, 1939, the Winterthur Carnival Society was founded. Its board of directors is the Winterthur Carnival Committee (Fakowi), which is responsible for organizing the Winterthur Carnival.

procedure

Carnival time traditionally begins on November 11th at 11:11 am. In January / February, the carnival is "officially" opened with the Hammenschmaus, which includes a festive meal and a stage program. On Shrove Friday, the fool's tree is set up on the Graben, followed by the symbolic handover of the city key to the Carnival Committee, which then takes control of the city.

The Guggen Parade will take place on Saturday evening, in which 34 Guggen musicians will take part in 2013 . After the Guggen Parade, the old town Dudlätä follows, where Guggenmusiken give small concerts at various selected locations in and around the old town of Winterthur .

The big carnival parade takes place on Sundays, in which all carnival groups and Guggenmusiken take part; In 2018 there were 72 groups.

On Monday, after a children's parade, the fool's tree is felled again in the afternoon and the Böögg is burned on the Zeughauswiese in the evening, accompanied by Guggen music .

There are other children's parades in Töss in the run-up to Carnival and on Carnival Saturday in Veltheim .

Around 3,000 active carnival enthusiasts take part in the Winterthur Carnival, and the events are followed by around 50,000 visitors.
